Daddy Catby Wain, Louis
DescriptionLondon: Blackie & Son Limited, 1914 This rare copy is one of the most charming of Louis Wain's books and it is richly illustrated with large chromolithographs on every one of the 35 pages. Each illustration is more or less full page, apart from the text. The story follows the life of the Daddy cat and the activities that he undertakes, which include scenes of him playing golf, tennis and shooting. It shows him out shopping with his wife and playing and tending to his two sons, Tom and Dick. Being chromolithographs, each illustration is wonderfully bright and the subjects and clothes are so typical of the period. The cover has a red spine and brown board covers with a paste down full colour picture to the front (see illustration). Condition: Binding: Corners and edges worn in parts, slight tear to top and bottom of spine. Original front and rear end papers present, front hinge cracked. Origninal 1914 inscription on front free end paper. Internal: Some remants of crayoning (now removed) on frontispiece and on the text of the first two pages. A 4 cm. tear (repaired) to one illustration. There are a few faint brown marks to a couple of pages, but there is no foxing. Apart from condition observations made, this is a very good bright copy..
