Small 8vo wooden box with pictorial top and many layers of milk paint, custom made brass closure at the front, interior coated with an acrylic polymer to protect the printed materials laid in; twenty cards laid in. Illus. (color and b/w plates). Limited, numbered edtion, this being 1 of 10. Signed by the author/artist. A book in the form of a recipe box. In the artist's words, "Taking the Soup is a collection of stories I have written and illustrated with my photographs and drawings, looking at the origin, myth, ritual or history of foods that we often take for granted. "Taking the Soup" and other expressions coming out of the Irish famine of the mid-eighteen hundreds, such as souperism and souper, are euphemisms for accepting food or other material benefits on the condition of forsaking oneÕs own spiritual allegiance to accept anotherÕs." The stories are told one twenty illustrated cards, each with a "cover" image illustrating the given story, all printed on an Indigo press. The stories are organized by subject cards under the headings: Food as Metaphor; Connection; and Power & Weapon. The author/artist has committed twenty-five percent of the sale of each volume to a charity focused on ending hunger.
