Originally published in Russian in 1862, this world-renowned novel portrays the conflict between the older, conservative generation & the modern democratically oriented younger generation in Russia. The novel caused an immediate storm of controversy upon publication. Turgeniev has often been credited with the invention of the word "nihilism," exemplified in the novel by the unforgettable character Bazarov.
