Former owner's name neatly written on ffep. The volume shows old water stains on the lower half of the covers and pages, without loss. The dust jacket also shows the water stain and is chipped at the top and bottom edges, particularly at the head and heel of the spine. The book is entirely intact, tight and square. An excellent reading copy. GOOD/GOOD-. Samuel Ichiye Hayakawa was born in Vancouver, Canada on July 18, 1906 to Japanese immigrant parents. He went on to became an American citizen and began a career as a scholar in the field of language communication at American universities. At the time he wrote this volume, he was Assistant Professor of English at the Illinois Institute of Technology. He went on to become president of the San Francisco State University from 1968 to 1973. In 1976 he was elected to the U. S. Senate from the State of California. He served as Senator from 1976 to 1983. Throughout Senator Hayakawa's long career he was best known as a semanticist, studying the history of language patterns and habits of thought.
