The author describes three different mindsets and how each affects individuals and their organizations: Entitlement--people feel entitled to rewards and lethargic about having to earn them; motivation and job-satisfaction are low; Fear--people are paralyzed by the threat of layoffs so they focus on job protection rather than efficiency; and Earning--people are energized by challenge and know that their accomplishments will be noticed and rewarded.
