Le Costume Historiqueby RACINET, Auguste
Book DescriptionParis: Librarie de Firmin-Didot et Cie, 1888. First folio edition (Le Grande dition). Six folio volumes (15 7/8 x 11 1/8 inches; 403 x 282 mm). Twenty parts in six volumes. Complete with 300 chromolithographs and 200 duotone lithographs with twenty-seven plates counting as "double-plates", as issued.Half red morocco over marbled boards, spines lettered and tooled in gilt in compartments, five raised bands. Engraved armorial bookplates of W. K. D'Arcy affixed to front pastedowns. Some minor wear to board edges and light foxing to front and rear of volumes, else a fine set, much better than usual. An excellent copy of the scarce folio edition of Racinet's masterwork on historic dress of the world, with its lovely chromolithographed plates -- many of which have been highlighted with gold and silver -- still quite bright and striking. Le Costume Historique is perhaps the most famous of all chromolithographed costume books of the 1800s, as valuable a resource today as it was when it was first issued. Hiler 732.
