Synopsis: A recommended book of the, Homeschool Christian.com Library selections. Vintage juvenile nonfiction of the early to mid 20th century Americana by Marguerite Henry (1902-1997), recipient of both the Newbery Honor Award in literature and the Newbery Medal. Ms. Henry's biographical account of Robert Fulton's (1765-1815) childhood years is both lively and entertaining. Robert Fulton, an American engineer and inventor, is widely credited with developing the first commercially successful steam-powered ship, and was commissioned by Napoleon Bonaparté to design the Natilus, the first practical submarine in history. Robert Fulton became interested in steam engines at the early age of 12, and by the age of 28 had offered proposals to both America and England to build a stem powered ship --- often referred to as steamboats in their versions that plied the river arteries. Robert Fulton died at the early age of 50, and you'll find numerous accounts covering his adult life, Ms. Henry's work is a somewhat rarer look into his child years in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Marguerite Henry was a proficient and popular writer, with a total of 56 works to her credit, five of which became movies. This work of Ms. Henry's was redone by Robert Patterson in 1962, using his own illustrations rather than the original plates of artist, Lawrence Dresser.
