Book DescriptionChicago: The John C. Winston Company, 1931 Signed by illustrator, Anton Otto Fischer, and William McFee who wrote the foreword. Letter of Provenance included. Anton Otto Fischer, was a long time cover artist and illustrator for The Saturday Evening Post. He was most well known for his maritime paintings. Fischer illustrated such books as Twenty-thousand Leagues under the Sea, Treasure Island, The Mutineers and many others. Apparently Fischer was in the habit of spelling his name both with and without the 'c'. His signature is dated N.Y. 1933, and is located on the illustrated endpaper. William McFee was the son of an English sea captain and spent his early life as a marine engineer. After WWI he settled in the US. He was a prolific writer of sea stories, McFee also wrote reviews for The New York Sun and The New York Times. McFee signature is located on the reverse of the frontispiece. Black cloth with gold titles and decorations. The title on the spine is very faded, but the front board is very bright. There is also a very large paste-on illustration on the front. The illustration is in very good condition. Wear to all edges, corners worn through. Head of spine is fraying, as are top corners. Binding is a little loose. Color illustrated endpapers. Introduction by William McFee and notes by M. Dodge Holmes, PhD. author of Joan of Arc. Thirteen full page color illustrations on glossy paper, including frontis. Limited numbered edition, 21 of 188 copies (the number 234 is crossed out and the no. 188 is written in). The cover illustration and cloth color are different from the other volumes as well. 414p..
