Schottus, woodcut historiated tailpiece, 120 ten-line woodcut historiated initials, 33 various smaller woodcut initials. Engraved portrait of Ortelius and 149 maps engraved by Frans Hogenberg and others on 120 copperplates and printed on 117 mapsheets, the maps richly embellished with figural cartouches, arms, sailing ships, sea monsters and deities and finely colored by a contemporary hand. Contemporary Dutch vellum over boards, overlapping fore-edges, covers gilt paneled with central gilt arabesque; spine ink-lettered with author and title; plain endpapers; gilt edges. Half green morocco folding-case. This atlas is an exquisite example of the extremely rare Spanish edition of Ortelius's Theatrum orbis terrarum (see also above, n. 22). It was the first edition of the Theatrum published under the imprint of Jan Baptist Vrients, who assumed responsibility for the atlas three years after Ortelius's death. Vrients added several new maps to Ortelius's oeuvre and continued to publish the atlas until his own death in 1612, after which no further editions appeared..
