Texas Tech U. Press, 2007. Paperback. New Book. Paperback. They were isolated, not by society but by geography. They had to represent civilization, although they were not completely convinced that civilization was such a great idea. Miller includes Anglo, Chinese, Hispanic and Native American pioneer women in this reprint of the 2000 original, and includes materials from the earliest settlers along with those from the second generation. She includes the stories of endless trials and hard work, of course, but she also includes fiction and non fiction that reflects the fantasies of their authors, far apart from their experiences in the log cabins and sod houses of the pioneers. Miller gives brief biographies that provide contexts for their work, and the cumulative effect is stimulating and refreshingly free of "pioneer mother" stereotypes.
