Brown embossed cloth with gilt lettering to cover and spine. t.e.g., coated endpapers. Slightly frayed corners. Light foxing to edges of plates, not affecting the images. Pp. xii, 240, steel-engraved frontispiece and title page (with engraved vignette), plus 26 engraved plates, with tissue guards intact, and numerous wood-engraved text illustrations. Includes a 17 pages publisher's catalogue bound at verso. Based on the original chronicles of the Pilgrims, many published by the Massachusetts Historical Society, this work was intended to enlighten the uninformed British reader as to the plight, struggle, voyage and eventual courage of the American forefathers who left a motherland fraught with the harshness of the intolerance of church and state to found a new nation. "Their story well exemplifies the providential law which evolves good out of evil." An important feature of this work are the delicately engraved plates by Bartlett featuring the architecture, monuments, topography, townscapes and waterways which played an important role in lives of our forefathers, and the eventual establishment of New England.
