Book description: Washington: Wendell And Van Benthuysen, 1848. This copy has the bookplate of B. Rush Bagg, Detroit, Michigan on the front pastedown. On the front free endpaper is a .presentation to B. Rush Bagg from what looks like Hon Wm H Emory, the author ?. Plain black cloth binding with gilt lettering on spine. top of title page shows loss of paper affecting a possible former signature. Foxing mainly to plates. Very good. 8vo. 416 pp. 40 full page b/w.lithographs printed one side only. 3 b/w. full page maps printed one side only. 1 b/w. woodcut. The large folding map is not present. It is said that some copies have it and some don't and the following text is the possible reason for this mixed state of affairs. Page 3 of this book reproduces a letter from the Bureau Of Topographical Engineers, dated, Decembr 15, 1847. I quote: "I beg leave to remark that Lieutenant Emory's map, sent with his report, and founded, as the report will show, upon numerous, careful, and well digested astronomical observations, is the original. WE HAVE NOT HAD TIME TO MAKE A COPY. I hope, therefore, that the original will be returned to the archives of this office, to which it belongs. A copy will be made in time for the engraver. This course will also afford the opportunity to revise the map. There is one leading position, in reference to which the computers of observations disagree more than a minute in longitude. There is also danger, if the original goes into the hands of the artist, that it will be defaced and seriously injured".
