Minor loss to extremities (though even so hard to detect), some rubbing to tips. Scattered foxing, bookplate. old bookseller's description tipped in. Overall, a wonderful copy of one of America's most influential books in a lovely example of the rare gift binding. Included in a vintage (circa 1880) albumen CDV of Stowe in one of her most famous poses. The photograph measures 4 inches x 5 5/8 inches on photographer's mount slightly larger. Mount has the name of the photographer (but it is illegible for being in a cursive script) and the address ('87 Union Sqr., N.Y.'). Clipped to the CDv is a small signed sentiment in Stowe's hand that reads simply; 'Very truly yours, H B Stowe, Hartford, Nov. 10th, 1876'. [Together with] STOWE, Harriet Beecher. ÒIn the emotion-charged atmosphere of mid-nineteenth-century America Uncle TomÕs Cabin exploded like a bombshell. To those engaged in fighting slavery it appeared as an indictment of all the evils inherent in the system they opposed; to the pro-slavery forces it was a slanderous attack on Ôthe Southern way of lifeÕ ... the social impact of Uncle TomÕs Cabin on the United States was greater than that of any book before or sinceÓ (Printing and the Mind of Man). Uncle TomÕs Cabin is the only American novel included in Printing and the Mind of Man. BAL 19343. Grolier, 100 American, 61. Grolier, 100 English, 91. Hildreth, p. 8. Sabin 92457.
