City politics and planning. (reprint, 1968)by Rabinovitz, Francine F
Book desription: AldineTransaction, 2007. Paperback. New Book. Paperback. This reprint from 1968 delves into the political impact of the city planner on community decision making. It is a comparative analysis of six studies of planning decisions in New Jersey communities that were chosen based on their reputations of having effective or ineffective planning; they vary in size, problems, and socioeconomic characteristics. Rabinovitz discusses the keys to effective influence--organization and a technical role orientation--and whether effectiveness varies with differences in these, providing generalizations about decision-making patterns, roles, and policies related to the urban development they produce. She focuses on the variables of political system, role, and organization, and also examines resources and constraints. Research was conducted from 1963 to 1965. Students of city planning, local government, political science, and urban sociology are the intended audience, as are professional planners and urban administrators. Rabinovitz taught policy, planning, and development at the U. of Southern California. (©2008 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR)
