Book Description

New York: D. Appleton and Company, 1920 Very Good condition. A clean, square, reasonably tight copy (see photos). No chips. No tears. First edition, first printing, American issue with the (1) printed on page 365. Garrison A30.I.a(1). Previous owner has neatly mounted a portrait of Wharton on a preliminary blank page. The word "Forasmuch" does appear on page 186. However as noted by Stephen Garrison [in EDITH WHARTON, A DESCRIPTIVE BIBLIOGRAPHY] "Forasmuch" is NOT determinative of the first printing since it also appears in the second. [It was changed to "Dearly beloved..." in the third]. Bound in the original deep red cloth, black-stamped on the spine and front cover. Pulitzer Prize-winning novel for 1921. Basis for the 1993 Martin Scorsese film starring Michelle Pfeiffer, Daniel Day-Lewis, Winona Ryder, Richard E. Grant, and Miriam Margolyes. On the pastedown endpaper is the handsome armorial bookplate of Frederick H. Comstock. A New York attorney and bibliophile, Comstock was President of Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity, 1876-1878 (CCNY 1872, Columbia 1874); and a Director of The Oratorio Society of New York. He had offices at 36 Wall Street in New York City, and maintained a summer residence in Keene, New York. First Printing of the First Edition . Hardcover. Very Good condition/No dust jacket. 8vo. 365pp.
