Bound in the original blue boards, with a blue cloth spine lettered in shiny silver. From the Dust Jacket: "Burke first attracted national attention in late 1943 when, as '31-Knot Burke,' he led a destroyer squadron in a series of striking night victories over the Japanese. In the popular mind, he was envisioned as a modern Viking, pursuing the enemy at high speeds through the night waters of the Solomon Islands. Early in 1944, Burke, to his disgust, received orders to quit his beloved destroyers and serve as chief of staff to Admiral Marc Mitscher, commander of the Fast Carrier Task Force. For Burke, the unwelcome change was in fact a blessing in disguise. The gallant but small-scale cruiser/destroyer operations had ended, and the carrier-spearheaded U.S. drive across the Pacific was just getting under way. Mitscher was no more pleased to have nonaviator Burke foisted on him than Burke was gratified to serve under Mitscher, but as each gradually recognized the great abilities of the other, there developed between them a wry admiration that ripened into lasting friendship as they shared the stress of battle from the landings at Hollandia and Saipan, the battles of the Philippine Sea and Leyte Gulf, and then on to Iwo Jima and the terrifying kamikaze attacks off Okinawa... At the relatively young age of fifty-four, so formidable were Burke's achievements and contributions to the Navy that President Eisenhower appointed him chief of naval operations over the heads of ninety-one more senior naval officers... In 1977 President Ford conferred on him the nation's highest civilian award, the Medal of Freedom." First Printing of the First Edition . Hard Cover. Fine condition/Fine dust jacket.
