Book Description
Edinburgh: Printed for J. MackEuen (vol. 1); printed by R. Fleming vol. 2), 1722; 1742. 1st edition. Full leather 19th century binding. V.g. /No Jacket. Vol. 1 was written by Alexander Nisbet, Gent., whereas vol. 2 is largely a forgery issued posthumously by his publisher; of the latter, only the chapters on cadency and the marshalling of arms, 113 pp., and the part describing the exterior ornaments of the shield, 146 pp., can be attributed to Nisbet. Both volumes are uniformly rebound in 19th century full calf, with attractively marbled end papers (small damaged patch to front of vol. 1), gilt tooling along the edges, double gilt margins and spine with five raised bands, the title, authorship, date and volume number being stamped on slightly darker leather. Vol. 1 [no frontispiece]: (6), iv, 1-451 (sphalm. '151') pp. plus 11 plates within the text; 24 pages of engravings; xxx, (2) pp. of index and alphabetical list. Vol. 2: (4), ii, engraved frontispiece, 308 pp., 46 pp. ('Historical and critical remarks'), xi pp. of indexes; 9 pp. of engravings at rear. All edges gilt. Occasional ink-blots internally but overall very good, with edge wear to extremities of binding but hinges with only minor cracking.
