God's Gym

by John Edgar Wideman

ISBN: 0618711996
ISBN-13: 9780618711994
Format: Paperback

Summary

In these 10 stories, John Edgar Wideman writes feelingly about characters who must make their way through a difficult world. "What We Cannot Speak of We Must Pass Over in Silence" centers on a life imprisonment, "Sightings" is about a man reflecting on suicide, "The Silence of Thelonious Monk" gives us Verlaine and Rimbaud engaging in a gunfight, and "Are Dreams Faster Than the Speed of Light" features a man who is terminally ill. The author, however, never gives up on his characters-and they never give up on their lives. Wideman continues to burnish the reputation he has gained as an award-winning writer with a hugely sympathetic viewpoint.

Media Reviews

"A rich display of the varied skills of one of our finest writers."

   -- Kirkus

"The full range of Wideman's talents are on display here...."

   -- Publishers Weekly

"You never know, because [Wideman] doesn't, whether he'll end up with something strong and sturdy and built to last, or just a fistful of loose yarn....Some readers are bound to find this sort of withholding-Wideman's persistent refusal to fulfill the requirements of well-made fiction-willfully perverse; and their frustration may be especially acute in GOD'S GYM because short stories, more than novels, are expected to be shapely, gem-like, self-sufficient. But it would be a mistake to think he's just messing with out heads. Wideman violates the conventions of narrative and, at times, language itself for the good reason that, after a lifetime of familiarity with them..., he has become convinced that they can't take him where he wants to go."

-- New York Times Book Review
