Doctor Syntax In Paris, Or A Tour In Search of The "Grotesqueby [COMBE, William (1741-1823)]First Edition
Book desription: London: Printed for W. Wright, 1820. First Edition. Full Leather. Near Fine. First Edition. 8vo, with 18 hand-colored plates (including the frontispiece and the engraved title with vignette) after Charles Williams. Near Fine, with just light wear along the leather spine and occasional foxing, with some heavier browning and soiling to the first few pages and the usual offsetting to pages preceding and following the plates. Beautifully rebound in full maroon morocco ruled in gilt, with five raised bands and gilt titles to the spine. The first Dr. Syntax book was written by William Combe and published in 1812. The bumbling Doctor became wildly popular, inspiring a number of imitators and parodies, of which this title is one. While the author is unknown, some authorities think it could be Combe himself.
