Summary
The wisecracking, angst-ridden hero of Gates's first novel, Peter Jernigan, is trying to raise his teenage son after the drunken death of his wife. Almost against his will, he becomes involved with the mother of his son's spacey girlfriend-a suburban survivalist named Martha who raises (and slaughters) rabbits in her basement. When he is fired from his job and the romance sours, Jernigan takes off for a wilderness cabin in the middle of a snowstorm, armed only with a bottle of gin. Like virtually all of Gates's fiction, JERNIGAN is about a witty, decent, lovable, hip loser who never really gives up hope that things will change.

Media Reviews
"JERNIGAN...is an aria of male self-pity, a simultaneously harrowing and hilarious performance redeemed by the author's melancholy compassion for his narrator and his consummate attention to character detail." -- James Hynes

Thanksgiving
by Michael Dibdin
Grieving over the recent death of his American wife, Lucy, Anthony, a British journalist, becomes obsessed with uncovering the truth about her life prior to their first meeting and journeys to the remote Nevada desert to confront Lucy's first husband, who retained a profound emotional link to her even after her marriage to Anthony. By the author of Blood Rain.

Rachel Papers
by Martin Amis
In Amis's first novel, he gives us one of the most noxiously believable--and curiously touching--adolescents ever to sniffle and lust his way through the pages of contemporary fiction. On the brink of twenty, Charles Highway preps desultorily for Oxford, cheerfully loathes his father, and meticulously plots the seduction of a girl named Rachel--a girl who sorely tests the mettle of his cynicism when he finds himself in love with her.

Rabbit Is Rich
by John Updike
The hero of John Updike's Rabbit, Run (1960), ten years after the hectic events described in Rabbit Redux (1971), has come to enjoy considerable prosperity as Chief Sales Representative of Springer Motors, a Toyota agency in Brewer, Pennsylvania. The time is 1979: Skylab is falling, gas lines are lengthening, the President collapses while running in a marathon, and double-digit inflation coincides with a deflation of national confidence. Nevertheless, Harry Angstrom feels in good shape, ready to enjoy life at last -- until his son, Nelson, returns from the West, and the image of an old love pays a visit to his lot. New characters and old populate these scenes from Rabbit's middle age, as he continues to pursue, in his erratic fashion, the rainbow of happiness.

The Quiet Game
by Greg Iles
Widower Penn Cage returns to his hometown of Natchez, Mississippi, where, finding that his father is being blackmailed, he reopens a notorious murder case that involves powerfully dangerous town forces, the FBI, and his own past. Reissue.

The Hotel New Hampshire
by John Irving
"The first of my father's illusions was that bears could survive the life lived by human beings, and the second was that human beings could survive a life led in hotels." So says John Berry, son of a hapless dreamer, brother to a cadre of eccentric siblings, and chronicler of the lives lived, the loves experienced, the deaths met, and the myriad strange and wonderful times encountered by the family Berry. Hoteliers, pet-bear owners, friends of Freud (the animal trainer and vaudevillian, that is), and playthings of mad fate, they "dream on" in a funny, sad, outrageous, and moving novel.
