Book desription: H.W. Wilson Company, 2004. Hardbound. New Book. Hardbound. Until the fifth edition, 1969, this great reference was titled Standard Catalog for Public Libraries. It is cited in Walford and Guide to Reference Books, which recommends the work for medium-sized public and for undergraduate libraries. PLC contains some 8,000 titles, anticipates 2,400 in three annual (free) supplements; all are arranged by Dewey class with notes being drawn from front matter and reviews. The venerable and admirable H.W. Wilson does parallel catalogs for children and public schools. Wilson should provide the same guidance for college and graduate libraries (ALA seems paralyzed at the third edition of Books for College Libraries, 1987; but we note that in March 2004 ALA & ACRL announced that Choice will manage production of an online successor, Resources for College Libraries. If RCL appears in 2006 it will be the 20th anniversary of BCL3). Meanwhile PLC can be a major selection help for every library beyond grade 8. (©2005 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR)
