This copy of Volume I signed, inscribed and dated by Dr. John James Rickford Macleod (1876-1935), March 1928, to the daughter of one of his fellow Scots chemistry colleagues, Elizabeth Menzies (1915-2003), daughter of Prof. Alan W.C. Menzies, physical chemist and Russell Wellman Moore Professor of Chemistry at Princeton University. Dr. Macleod was co-recipient of the Nobel Prize in 1923 for Physiology or Medicine with Dr. Sir Frederick Banting for their discovery of insulin in the laboratory at the University of Toronto, which Dr. Macleod headed. Dr. Macleod's inscription in this book in ink: "To Betty Menzies from a new friend J.J.R. Macleod, March 1928." (In March of 1928, Dr. Macleod delivered the Vanuxem Foundation Lectures on "The Fuel of Life" at Princeton University.) Volume III has a secondary Christmas presentation to Miss Menzies from her father, noted physical chemist, Alan W.C. Menzies, at Christmas 1928. Elizabeth Menzies became a well-known member of the Princeton community as a photographer and historian.
