Book summary

Threatened with extinction in 2005, the downtown New York punk rock club CBGB launched several fund-raising campaigns to raise both money and awareness of its plight. One of them took the form of this evocative collection of photographs of bands, audiences, and regulars from the club's 30 years of existence. Black-clad and well-assembled, this glossy compilation captures the squalid yet invigoratingly creative essence of an establishment justifiably known as punk rock's headquarters. Appropriately opening the collection with a shot of the club's notoriously foul toilet facilities, such noted photographers as Bob Gruen, David Godlis, Roberta Bayley, and Ebet Roberts contribute some remarkable pictures of artists like Blondie, the Ramones, Talking Heads, Suicide, the Dead Boys, and Patti Smith in both performance modes and relaxing backstage, accompanied by celebrities including Andy Warhol, Allen Ginsberg, and Lou Reed. Hilly Kristal, the club's owner and presiding master of ceremonies, affectionately recalls his brainchild's history, while, in a postscript, the eclectic musician David Byrne notes the venue's function as an invaluable safety net--creatively, socially, and financially--for a generation of musicians.
