Book Description
A rare charcoal on card three quarter length portrait drawing of George Bernard Shaw, measuring 5 x 8 inches (approx), by artist Michael Hurl that has been signed by the artist and additionally inscribed and signed by George Bernard Shaw himself. George Bernard Shaw offers a critique of the drawing as follows: "My paws have more character in real life; but let it pass." Underneath the image there is a large signature of Shaw's in full "G. Bernard Shaw" that has been dated Malvern 1936. Some years later, in 1941, during the grip of war, Michael Hurl's daughter attempted to sell this portrait drawing to George Bernard Shaw. Shaw sent back the following 5 line response on his personal compliment card that he has signed and accompanies this portrait drawing: "The war taxation has left me without a penny to spare; but I daresay the bank will cash my cheque and the shops give me credit for 12 weeks. Do not send the sketch: I am not a pawnbroker; and you are an idiot. My regards to your father. GBS" The card is dated in George Bernard Shaw's hand as 29th April 1941 The "sketch" is in excellent condition, with 4 mounts to the reverse (the bottom mounts slightly coming through to the front of the card. The compliment card has suffered a little from damp and the ink has discoloured slightly. But, this is an exceptionally rare drawing and card associated with George Bernard Shaw during the war years. . Signed by Author. Illus. by Michael Hurl.
