Book summary
British historian Norman Davies relates a horrifying and compelling episode of late-World War II history. The German army, in retreat from the Russians, slaughtered tens of thousands of Poles who had gathered in Warsaw to rise up against them. Russian troops, who could have aided the Poles, held back outside the city and observed the 10-day battle. Warsaw was soon after "liberated" by the Russians, and Poland fell behind the Iron Curtain. A New York Times Notable Book for 2004.
