Alexander McLeod, a Canadian, had killed an American on board the Ship Caroline. The ship was en route to Navy Island to bring supplied to McKenzie and his followers. Although McLeod was arrested in New York state, Adam argues he shouldn't be tried on grounds that the Caroline was "in hostile array against the British Government".
