The Empty House & Other Ghost Stories (First Issue)by Blackwood, AlgernonFirst UK edition (first issue).
Book DescriptionOriginal pictorial cloth boards depicting the design of a ghostly phantom crawling over the wall of a deserted London townhouse. 316pp + 31pp rear catalogue (dated "Autumn 1906"). Ten short stories. Very minor loss lower spine end, one small closed tear top spine end, else a very bright copy. The author's first and most attractive collection of ghost stories including 'Keeping His Promise' and the title tale, which is derived from Lord Lytton's story 'The Haunted & The Haunters'. A rare book and very uncommon in superior condition. Note: According to Ashley's "Algernon Blackwood: A Bio-Bibliography" [1987], this edition was published in a small run of just 750 copies. Some of these copies have "Autumn 1906" catalogues, some "January 1907" and some "Spring 1908". It is highly likely that copies with the "Autumn 1906" catalogues have priority over the later ones.
