Book summary

A kindly but hard-of-hearing fairy godmother brings trouble into the life of a young girl named Elsie and her family. For example, when Elsie's mother says that Elsie has been behaving much better than "before," the fairy godmother mishears and thinks that Elsie's mother wants there to be "four" multiples of her child. The situation spirals out of control until the family cat finally finds a way to set things right. Watercolor and colored pencil illustrations accompany the text.

Media reviews

"Babbitt's story and illustrations are wonderfully quirky, even if just a little flawed. The dynamic watercolor and pencil compositions demonstrate a style and attention that recall Norman Rockwell's work."
