Book desription:

A remarkable, original Kodachrome II color photograph print of Paul & Linda McCartney from the April 1971 day shoot in Malibu, but not the widely circulated image used for the iconic, April 16, 1971 LIFE magazine cover. This is another shot, private in feeling and shot close-up with greater detail, believed never printed for sale or reproduced in a book. The 10.875 x 13.875 inches photograph with its beautiful color composition and moving contrasts of emotional openness and reticence communicates Paul and Linda's great mutual love in a way never surpassed. Offered loose as given in the original Kodak color enlargement board folder. AVAILABILITY: Very Rare and Highly Notable. Because of its extraordinary intimacy and emotional nakedness, this far more interesting shot was judged by Paul & Linda as not suitable for public circulation. It was exclusively printed for them 3 months after the shoot; number of prints is unknown, but certainly, a very small number, probably in the range of 5-10. PROVENANCE: Print given to Vincent Romeo, manager to Paul McCartney; subsequently purchased at the first auction of Beatles and McCartney memorabilia from his collection. PRINT DETAIL: Never mounted. No owner markings. 2 scratches, top right corner, far removed from the duo portrait composition: 1) size of a small grain of sand: 2) .3 cm in a half-ring. Scrutinized at extreme close-up in very bright light, light much brighter than it would be displayed in, one can see a slight dulling of Paul's hair on the left side of his head, almost certainly from cleaning, for there has been no other deterioration of the colors in the print. With ordinary viewing conditions, the fault won't be seen. Top tips with very slight wear: outer edges with a light and gentle upward bend: both will vanish when mounted. Rear with finger smudge and a small black bar spot; otherwise clean, and marks can only be seen from the rear. FOLDER CONDITION: Good. DETAIL: Outside crack along fold-over doesn't continue in: light edge wear: some soiling: auction number on upper cover. PHOTOGRAPH PRINT SIZE: 10.875 x 13.875 inches or 276 x 353 mm. FOLDER SIZE: 11.9375 x 14.875 inches. THE PHOTOGRAPH: Photographs at the Malibu shoot were taken by Henry Diltz, the noted photographer of rock 'n' roll musicians and the 60's-70's California rock music scene, using a Pentax SLR 35mm camera with Kodachrome II film. Shot in early April of 1971, (end of the first week-beginning of the second), the photograph was printed from the transparency in July 1971 by Kodak using the K-12 Development Process: Kodak's red stamped seal on the back of the photograph states made by Kodak, July 71R. The day shoot is well documented. The couple was being introduced to a worldwide audience prior to the release of RAM, Paul McCartney's second solo record album after the Beatles' breakup, and the first to contain credited musical contributions from Linda McCartney. Shots were taken by the garden near the pool at the Malibu beach house rented by Paul & Linda, there with their 2 girls, Heather (by Linda's first marriage) and Mary (b. 1969, their first child together). Linda was 3 months pregnant with Stella. Recording had been finished in March and publicity was proceeding for its mid-May release. Paul and Linda were working on the illustrated RAM songbook. Henry Diltz, already a well-known photographer of rock musicians, was asked to come do his "fly on the wall thing". (He had first met Linda in casual come-upon fashion in the summer of 1966 at the Modern Age Photo Lab in New York.) Shot around the same time of day as the LIFE cover shot, Paul & Linda are dressed in the same casual clothes and in the background is a cluster of the same yellow flowers, now just out of focus. DILTZ: A leading rock photographer, he was the official photographer of Woodstock and the Monterey Pop Festivals and is known for his friendships with many musicians, especially with Crosby, Stills & Nash. Photographs for more than 250 album sleeves are credited to him, including the Doors' "Morrison Hotel", James Taylor's "Sweet Baby James", Jackson Browne's eponymous debut, the Eagles' "Desperado", and the first album of Crosby, Stills & Nash. Graham Nash has written the foreword for the comprehensive book on his work, "Henry Diltz: Rock On: The Photographs". IMAGES: by request. CATEGORY: Rock and Roll Memorabilia: photographs.
