London, United Kingdom: Faber and Faber, 1988 UNCORRECTED ADVANCE PROOFS FOR THE HARDBACK EDITION. Prepublication first edition. (Probable publication date 22 February 1988). 210 pps. Clean text pages no internal markings. Spender first began working on the novel in 1929. The Temple is set in Weimar Germany with a printed dedication to W.H. Auden, Christopher Isherwood and Herbert List "all of whom appear thinly disguised and fantasized in the story". In the introduction he states: "In the late Twenties young English writers were more concerned with censorship than with politics.... 1929 was the last year of that strange Indian Summer - the Weimar Republic. For many of my friends and for myself, Germany seemed a paradise where there was no censorship and young Germans enjoyed extraordinary freedom in their lives". Spender helped found the Poetry Book Society. He was awarded the Queen's Gold Medal for Poetry in 1971 and was knighted in 1983. The Temple is now out of print.
