Book desription: Kingston, Jamaica: Pan-Jamaican Investment Trust Limited, 1990. Limited to 500 copies. Large folio, half red morocco with marbled boards and a gilt cartouche. Fine. The volume is as new; the slipcase unevenly faded on sides, rubbed on front, and has a 5" diameter dampstain on back (slipcase is otherwise very good). This is a landmark work in Jamaican history, as well as a highspot in the collecting of color-plate books. The illustrations are remarkably delicate expressions of the island's topography, and the accompanying text provides penetrating insight into Jamaican society. Hakewill's tour of Jamaica, in 1820-21, was during a time of prosperity for the island's sugar planters. Half of the illustrations are of sugar plantations; he obviously was keeping an eye out for potential patrons to buy his book. Hakewill came from an artistic family, and was trained as an architect. He is best remembered for his books--primarily this one, and also A Picturesque Tour of Italy. Later in his career he returned to architecture, exhibiting many drawings and writing books on that subject. Hakewill originally issued this work in five parts, and there are many variations in the plates for different bound copies. This reproduction includes all of the known plates, using as its basis the pristine copy which belonged to King Louis Phillipe of France. Original copies of this work are quite expensive, and this is the only later edition.
