[10], [xviii], [402], xiv pp. This volume contains the preface and is printed entirely in lush colors, with each page being surrounded by elaborate borders taken from medieval illuminated manuscripts, no two pages being the same. [144], [52], [18], 16 pp. With four mounted photographs and illustrated with many wood-engraved borders, ornamental initials, elaborate head- and tail-pieces, etc. It includes a history of illumination, a study of the authorship of The Imitation of Christ, and a biographical catalogue of manuscripts and previous editions. Together, two quarto volumes. Beautifully bound in full oxblood crushed morocco, (unsigned, possibly the publisher's binding) with five raised bands, covers ruled in blind with blind floral corner pieces. Spines lettered in gilt and blind in compartments, all edges gilt. A superb set.
