Book description: Jansson, Jan. Insulae Iohannis Mayen/Cum universo situ Sinuum/et Promontoriorum/Nova descriptis. Ca.1650. Engraved chart with outline hand colouring of the Norwegian Jan Mayan Island. Sheet size approx 590mm x 470mm, plate size approx 520mm x 410mm. Title cartouche of whalers with harpoons, a scale with cherubs, compass rose and rhumb lines. Hand coloured vignettes of whalers and galleons in the sea area. On land, the worlds most northerly volcano of Beerenberg is depicted in colour. Very light age tone to blank edges. Small splits at head and foot of centre fold not affecting plate area. Verso blank. An attractive chart with early hand colouring of this remote Arctic area. Given that today the volcano is largely covered by an ice-cap and often covered in mist, it is a noteworthy 17th century record. Very good condition.
