Book Description

UK 1st edition. States "Fifty-First Thousand" to title page although this was either a reference to the anticipated print run or publisher's bluff (many books by this publisher feature misleading claims about print run size). Original pictorial cloth with gilt spine and cover titles. Black endpapers; 208pp; tissue-guarded frontispiece; various statements and prefaces by the author. According to Copac, the British Library does not possess a copy, though file copies exist at Oxford, Cambridge and Edinburgh (which possess the "51st thousand" claim). Two novellas. NB: To make things even more confusing, 'A Russian Ghost Story' originally appeared in 1873 under the title 'Christmas Tales For Christmas Charities', subtitled 'Two Nights In A Haunted House In Russia'. Description: A very good copy with light overall wear, rubbing to spine ends and nicking to the corner tips. Literary Context: "To go back a little, in 1859 that ardent "old Conservative" Edward Tracy Turnerelli (1813-1896) published A Night in a Haunted House, A Tale of Facts, describing his own experiences in an ancient mansion at Kilkenny. It is a narrative of extraordinary interest; and publicly related, as it originally was told, at a meeting in aid of various charities at Ryde, it created an immense sensation. Perhaps even more notice was attracted by the same author's Two Nights in a Haunted House in Russia, 1873, which ran through many editions, and was very widely discussed during the next decade and longer." Montague Summers (from the introduction to his 1931 collection 'The Supernatural Omnibus'). Note that Summers appears to have been duped by the "51st Thousand" claim; it actually appeared in two separate editions (see above).
