THE IMPRINT, VOLUME TWO (2)
London: Imprint Publishing Company, 1913. Beige textured cloth, black titles written in calligraphy on front board & spine. 43 + 15a + ii + 49-94 + 15a + ii + 95-142 + 10a + 80 + supplementary pages. Further (& final) issues of this important journal of printing, illustrating & book-making, bound together without their months of publication specified, so that it is hard to be certain which issues they were, but there are at least 3 issues here, presumably from the period July to November 1913 [Vol. I contained Jan. through June], plus much supplementary material. Introductory Notes by J.H. Mason attempt to explain the rearrangement of material in this volume. Articles tend to be longer & more thorough than in the first volume; they include "Notes on some Liturgical Books" by Stanley Morison, which is illustrated with sample pages from early missals etc. printed in black & red; another lengthy article, on Broadsides, by Harold Monro, has many b/w woodcuts. A long section is devoted to the complete version of "Printers Devices, Being a Partial Reprint of the Fifth & Sixth Days Delectable Discourses Thereon from the Bibliographical Decameron of the Rev. T.F. Dibdin" - illustrated with many printers' marks in b/w, & b/w & red. "Poster Advertising in the [London] Underground" has color plates, plus b/w reproductions. "The Selfridge Competition" [for letterheads for the London department store] has the entries tipped in to the book. Shorter articles include "The Offset Method of Printing" by Harry A. Maddox, "The Inking of the Forme" & "An American Perfecting Machine" by Daniel T. Powell, "Art & Printing in Russia", by Alex. Bakshy, & "Decoration & its Uses", by Edward Johnston. Section at rear, printed on beige card-stock, has covers of some of the issues bound in. Binding is sound, & straight. Board corners & spine top & base are lightly rubbed; spine base bumped; a few small marks to boards, otherwise boards are clean, with titles clear. Attractive bookplate to front endpaper. Endpapers are toned, one illustrated page has small ink smudge in margin, otherwise interior is clean & unmarked. Quite heavy book - extra postage may be needed in some circumstances. (NB: We also have VOLUME ONE of The Imprint). Hard Cover. Very Good/No Jacket. Quarto.
