Book Description
Center for Media and Independent Living/University of California,, 2003. VHS. Very Good. 29 min. Color. VHS. In original package. Shot on location in the slum neighborhoods of Nairobi, "Tumaini" (Swahili for "hope") documents the work of the Kenya Voluntary Women's Rehabilitation Centre, a grassroots agency that reaches out to provide support and economic alternatives to Nairobi's sex workers. The film profiles several women who have received small loans from the agency and who are attempting to begin a new life with a small business, such as a hair salon or a vegetable stand. "Tumaini" will open students' eyes and generate thought and discussion in a wide range of courses in African studies, women's studies, public health, development studies, and cultural anthropology.
