Boston and New York: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1920. Near Fine/Near Fine. The First US edition of this book written by John Buchan with the help of his wife, Susan, being, in essence, a symposium on the great issues of the day. A virtually Fine copy (shelf wear to front of bottom of the rear board) of this book in a Near Fine dust jacket (browning to the spine and edges of the jacket and a small indentation at the lower rear joint, very light wear to the head of the spine). Given the scarcity of this book, especially in the original dust jacket, it perhaps should be considered to be in Fine condition. The UK edition is essentially impossible for the collector to find and the US edition is quite scarce, especially in the dust jacket. While Buchan told his US publisher that the UK edition (1919) had generated "a good deal of interest among political people" the US edition sold poorly. (Michael Redley, February, 2001 review of the book's history for The John Buchan Society). So little-known was the book that, according to Redley, a magazine called the Butcher's Advocate asked for a review copy in the belief that the book related to its readers' area of interest. Redley states: "Sadly this fascinating book is hard to find. Only the largest libraries have it, usually still hidden in the catalogue under the pseudonym of its authors. Book dealers treat it as a 'rare' book, priced accordingly. Buchan is largely to blame. He always refused consent for the book to be reprinted." (In 1936, the same title was used for a one of Buchan's Hannay adventure stories. (The US edition was titled The Man from the Norlands.) A RARE OPPORTUNITY for the Buchan collector. THIS BOOK IS ELIGIBLE FOR A DISCOUNT OF UP TO 20% OFF THE PRICE SHOWN IN THIS LISTING FOR ORDERS PLACED ON OR BEFORE DECEMBER 31, 2009. (Not available in combination with any other discounts.)
