Book description: Lugundi Batavorum / Lugundi Batorum: Elseviriorum / Ioannis Maire, 1643. A rare first edition of two books by the scholar Claude Saumaise (Claudius Salmasius) (1588-1653), handsomely bound in contemporary vellum. 'De Hellenistica Commentarius' is Saumaise’s great contribution to biblical commentary, his study of the language of the Greek-speaking Jews who produced texts of the Septuagint and New Testament. The French Protestant Claude Saumaise (Claudius Salmasius) (1588-1653) was a professor at Leiden, and an adversary of the university librarian, the scholar Daniel Heinsius (1580-1655), against whose theories it is directed against. In 'Funus Linguae Hellenisticae' (1643) Saumaise contends that the language of the Greek Scriptures is not a separate dialect but the ordinary Greek of the time. Text in Latin and Greek. This volume bears the name of Jani Broukhusn on the title page. Jan van Broekhuizen (1649-1707), was a great Dutch classical scholar and poet. His classical reputation rests on his editions of Propertius (1702) and Tibullus (1707). A very good condition volume bound in full vellum with some soiling and edgewear. Spine title lettered in old ink. Vellum fore-edges yapped, or folded-over. Front endpages replaced. Early previous owners notations on the blank preliminary pages. Seventeenth-century owners name (see above) on the title page. The interior is in generally very good condition, with some very occasional ink marginalia or underlining. Otherwise, the contents is clean and sturdy with no loose or torn pages. 464 (printed in error as 664), [6]; 390, [1] pages. page size: 4" wide X 6-1/8" tall (8.75 x 15.75 cm.) . First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good/No Jacket.
