Brain Guy by Appel, Benjamin
First Edition
New York: Alfred A. Knopf. 1934. First Edition. Hardcover. [good solid copy, light browning at fore-edge, very light soiling to covers along top and bottom edges; the foil-covered jacket is in exceptional condition, with some minor surface chipping/peeling at the spine ends and along the bottom edge of the rear panel, but only light wear around the edges of the front panel; the jacket also shows the usual scuffing/rubbing/surface-scratching (which looks worse in the scan than in reality), but in general this detracts very little from its attractiveness]. Hard-boiled novel about "an intelligent, educated rent-collector who more by chance than by design drifts into the underworld. But once there, he climbs high: plans robberies that others commit, gathers a gang around him, gains in power, and slowly succumbs to the psychology of the criminal." There is a publisher's blurb opposite the half-title page for two other titles in a similar vein: Hammett's "The Thin Man" and Cain's "The Postman Always Rings Twice." Unlike those two, "Brain Guy" has slipped into obscurity (maybe it's because they never made a movie out of it).
