Heart of the rock; the Indian invasion of Alcatraz. (reprint, 2002)by Eagle, Adam Fortunate
Book desription: U. of Oklahoma Press, 2008. Paperback. New Book. Paperback. This is a paperbound reprint of a 2002 book. The 1969 invasion of Alcatraz Island by Native Americans is told in detail by Fortunate Eagle, one of the main instigators of the occupation. The author relates that while he planned the event carefully from the mainland, the repercussions derived from the actual event defied expectations, and the occupation was ultimately called "the most significant Indian action since Little Bighorn." Writing for general audiences, the author includes many photographs of the people involved with the action which resulted in a permanent sign on Alcatraz which reads "Indians welcome-Indian land." Findley, who originally covered the story for the San Francisco Chronicle, collaborated with the author on this book as well. (©2008 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR)
