Book summary

On Christmas Eve a young boy who truly believes in Santa Claus is invited to board the Polar Express--a train that brings him and other young believers directly to the North Pole. Once there, the boy is chosen by Santa himself to receive the very first gift of the Christmas season. The gift the boy selects, a bell from the harness of one of Santa's reindeers, becomes a magical reminder of the boy's very special night. A look at not only the magic of Christmas, but also at the power of faith and the wonder of innocence, THE POLAR EXPRESS is illustrated with carefully detailed pastel oil paintings on brown paper and is the winner of the 1986 Caldecott Medal.

Book description: Wilmington, Massachusetts, U.S.A.: Houghton Mifflin, 1985. Uncorrected Publisher's Dummy, in a trial dust jacket. Preceding both the proof and the first edition 1st printing. The dust jacket, text and illustrations ( and placement of text and illustrations ) All vary significantlyfrom theat of the first edition, first printing. Most notable are the following : (a) The authors name appears at the front lower panel of the dust jacket ( unlike the first edition ) , (b) The illistration on the tittle page is different than that of the first edition, first printing. and (c) The placement of the txt is swapped from the left to the right side ( and vice versa ) on about half of the two-page spreads. Most interestingly, the text has been tipped-in next to each of the illistrations rather than having been printed onto the page. One of probably one of a few mocked-up copies produced for use at Houghton Mifflin. An extraordinary, visceral and attractive early version of a book that has become a childrens Christmas classic. Basis for the 2004 animated motion picture starring Tom hanks. Note i would like to thank Royal Books, Inc. for there research and write up on this item. Mclin havin. Uncorrected Publisher's Dummy,in Trial . Hard Cover. Fine/Fine. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall.
