The two peace treaties of Osnabruck and Munster, signed on May 15 and October 24, 1648, respectively, ended both the Thirty Years' War in Holy Roman Empire (today mostly Germany) and the Eighty Years' War between Spain and the Republic of the Seven United Netherlands. The treaties involved the Holy Roman Emperor, Ferdinand III (Habsburg), the Kingdoms of Spain, France and Sweden, the Netherlands and their respective allies among the princes and the republican Imperial States of the Holy Roman Empire. The Peace of Westphalia resulted from the first modern diplomatic congress and initiated a new order in central Europe based on the concept of state sovereignty. Until 1806, the regulations became part of the constitutional laws of the Holy Roman Empire.

Guillaume-Hyacinthe Bougeant, known as le Père Bougeant (1690-1743) was a French Jesuit and historian. His historical works on the Thirty Years' War (1618-1648) and on the Treaty of Westphalia (originally published in 1727) have been regarded as among the best historical books written by Jesuits. This set is lacking Volume 2 'Histoire des Guerres et des Negociations...' which was based on the Memoirs du Comte d'Avaux. This volume is the only volume in this set that has a different title, which may explain why it was separated from its companions.

Five volumes in contemporary marbled leather, having five raised spine bands with gilt decorations in the compartments, and red and black leather labels with gilt lettering. Light to mild wear at the extremities. No cracked or broken joints and hinges. There is an early owners name-plate on the front pastedowns. Very attractive marbled endpapers, front and rear. The interior has some very occasional old light dampstaining, otherwise the interiors are quite clean and sturdy, with no torn or loose pages. Overall, a rather attractive set of this scarce history in a very early French binding. xii, 494, [2]; 596, [4]; 494; 458; 510 pages. Page size: 3-3/4" wide X 6-1/2" tall (9.5 x 16.25 cm.).
