Born to Be by Gordon, Taylor
First Edition
New York: Covici-Friede. Very Good+ in Very Good+ dj. 1929. First Edition. Hardcover. NOISBN . [nice solid copy, some foxing/spotting to endpapers and here and there throughout the book, otherwise just lightly shelfworn; jacket a bit soiled, with a horizontal crease running right across the middle (including the flaps) and a vertical crease in the middle of the spine (it appears as though the jacket had been removed from the book and folded at some point), but other than the crease the jacket shows very little wear and is quite attractive]. (color frontispiece, 9 black & white plates) Noted autobiography by a minor Harlem Renaissance figure, known mostly as a singer of spirituals in the 1920s, sometimes in partnership with J. Rosamond Johnson. The book starts with his childhood in White Sulphur Springs, Montana, and goes on to chronicle "his experiences as a Pullman porter, his years with the Ringling Brothers circus, and hundreds of other interesting and unusual things that happened to him." Given that some of those "interesting and unusual things" involved hs coping with various forms of racism and discrimination, it does seem a bit odd that the jacket blurb calls the book "one of the most amusing and smartest books of the season." Introduction by Muriel Draper; Foreword by Carl Van Vechten. [This book is included in ReadInk's Catalog Number 1, "Objects of Obscure Desire," which is available upon request.] .
