The first consists of extracts from the early agricultural writers such as John Fitzherbert, Sir Hugh Plat and Gervase Markham who fill the void between the early years of the sixteenth century and the middle of the eighteenth century. The second and third parts present the various elements of social change undergone by the old type of country life, which was really peasant life - a corporate society which was to lose some of its ' organic unity' after about 1840. Land lore, folksongs and dialect are among other aspects of rural life covered in this anthology. The writers presented are George Crabb, Thomas Hardy, D.H. Lawrence, Henry Williamson and others. Dust jacket in good condition, spine ends a little rubbed, top spine edge also has two very minute tears, and top and bottom front edges are slightly rubbed, back cover slightly grubby. Book in very good condition. Hard Cover.
