Book description: Versailles: Veuve E. Aubert, 1894. First edition. One of 250 numbered copies. Small octavo (8 x 5 1/2 inches). [6], 264 pp. With six engravings (each plate in two states) and a large folding plan of the Versailles Garden at rear (with some printing in gold). Beautifully bound by Dupre (gilt-signed on front turn-in) in full crushed dark blue morocco, Jansenist with only a large armorial centerpiece on the front and rear covers, spine compartments with gilt spine lettering and a single fleur-de-lys in each compartment, gilt fillet board edges, gilt turn-ins, full terra-cotta morocco doublures with edges in a gilt pattern, moire silk endpapers, top edge gilt. Original wrappers bound in at front and rear. Two bookplates (Paul Aubre & Robert Marceau). Housed in a fleece-lined morocco-edged slipcase. A gorgeous copy in a gorgeous binding.The book itself is quite scarce and describes the life of the court of Louis XIV and Louis XV at the Chateau of Versailles, with all it foibles and intrigues, focusing largely on the personalities of the colorful relatives, advisers, and paramours of the two Kings.
