Book desription: Paris: Chez la Veuve Sebastien Mabre-Cramoisy , 1687. First edition. Quarto. [14], 247, [1], [18, index] pp. Contemporary full brown speckled calf, spine gilt in compartments, red morocco gilt lettering label. Woodcut printer's device on title page. Early owner's signature on front pastedown ('Martin Bowes'). Small bit of darkening along joints. A beautifully clean copy in an attractive, unrestored binding. Jean-Francois Felibien, son of Andre who penned the classic Entretiens sur les vies et sur les ouvrages des plus excellents peintres anciens et modernes, in this book raised the awareness and placed more firmly in the historical review the legitimacy of the Gothic style of architecture. He assigned the rise of Gothic architecture in the South to the reign of Honorius (384-423) but in France to the reign of the sons of Hugh Capet, around the start of the eleventh century. In this book he describes at length all of the major French Cathedrals. Reprinted and translated a number of times.
