Reminiscences of Captain Gronow, Formerly of the Grenadier Guards, and M.P. for Staffordby GRONOW, Captain [Rees Howell]
London: Smith, Elder and Company , 1862-1866 . Four volumes. Octavo. Engraved frontispiece, 245 [2] ads; 232 [2] ads; color frontispiece, 234 [6] ads; engraved portrait frontispiece, 200 pages. Finely bound by Riviere in full smooth calf, covers triple gilt fillet borders, circular gilt corner devices, spine compartments elaborately stamped in gilt, red and olive leather labels lettered in gilt, gilt inner dentelles. Deep French ultra-marine endpapers. Top edges gilt. Overall a bright and very attractive set with minimal shelfwear, the chief flaw being the re-attachment of the front cover of Volume One. While it was professionally done, there is still a visible seam. A collection of memoirs about the Peninsular War, the Battle of Waterloo, and society and personalities of Regency London and 19th century Paris, by a sometime Grenadier Guards officer, unsuccessful parliamentarian, and dandy. Gronow displays social attitudes of the day which would now be regarded as unacceptable, but is a clever raconteur who brings to life both the horrors of war and the gaiety of high society.
