Book desription: Unicorn, (Paddock Wood, Kent, 1988).. 144 pp, 4to (11 7/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Map endpapers. Profusely illustrated with b&w photos. "When the Midland decided to extend its lines to reach Manchester, the sheer scale of the engineering works were daunting in the extreme; th. e routes had to pierce the rugged limestone hills of Derbyshire and massive viaducts had to be built to cross the fast flowing rivers which cut between the hills in this part of the country. The author starts at Derby...and covers both the route. s t o Manchester via Bakewell and the Hope Valley. The former of which gave the passenger one of the msot spectacular scenic journeys to be found anywhere in Britain, as the Midland trains hauled by Kirtley and Johnson engines thundered through th. e r oc ky gorges and into dark tunnels only to emerge suddenly onto some high viaduct or rocky ledge hewn from the hillside, with superb views on either hand. This then is the subject of this lineside picture anthology, an amazing collection of per. io d pho tographs which includes not only views along the lines, but also of the towns and villages along the route. The accompanying text will appeal to the railway enthusiast, the local historian, and to the residents of the area, some of whom wi. ll re memb er and like to recall those less hectic days of yesteryear." Faint cigarette odor, 1/2" closed split to cloth at top of rear hinge, slight bump at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light edge wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and. fl ap- folds , slight fading to color on spine. VG/VG.
