London: printed for the author, by T. Spilsbury, Snowhill, 1780. 2 vols. in 1 folio. Rebacked, original boards in full tree calf, original gilt title label attached to spine, 6 raised bands. V.g. /No Jacket. A handsome set of this comprehensive treatment of heraldry and armorial devices, with engraved portrait of the author, list of subscribers and 24 engraved plates. Title page offset from frontispiece, minor binding error (M2 bound before M1), p. 302 has a partially repaired tear at tail slightly affecting text, occasional foxing and browning, bookplate with "Stand sure" motto and Saltire device, believed to be that of the Scots-born John Anderson of Fermoy House, Ireland, smaller owner's ticket "Bethune of Balfour" [eldest son of Admiral Charles Ramsay Drinkwater] on blank verso preceding frontispiece, contemporary tree calf, rubbed, corners and edges worn. The author, who is not related to the vendor, rose from humble origins to become Mowbray Herald Extraordinary at the College of Arms.
