Book Description
London: Ernest Nister, 1902 One of the rarest titles by Louis Wain that has been given a guide price of £700 (see 'Collecting Children's Books 2007 page 386). However, despite the beautiful condition of this book our price is much lower! This is one of the best examples that we have seen of this or any Louis Wain book, that does not exhibit the deterioration that is often associated with these early Louis Wain books. The original colour illustrated front board has three cats to the front and an armorial shield to the top left corner. The boards have wear to the edges and some marks to the front and back boards, but mostly very clean and extremely presentable. The original green cloth spine is still present, which is worn particularly to the top and bottom. This is one of the most attractive set of boards that we have seen. The original blue floral endpapers are still present to the front and back of the book with marks to the front endpaper and fading/discolouration to both the front and rear endpapers. There is a crack to the front gutter where the spine has worn - but the front board is still very securely attached to the book and appears to be more cosmetic than structural. To the reverse of the front endpaper is a blank page (opposite the illustrated Half Title Page) that bears a large contemporary inscription in pencil. There are 144 numbered pages with numerous colour illustrations with vivid colours supplemented with stunning black and white illustrations of cats throughout. The pages are in Good to Very Good condition with normal age toning (though really quite light) and some very old tape marks to a few of the pages to the beginning of the book.
